In the last decade, the number of museums and art galleries has significantly increased the world over. Some opine that museums and art galleries should have free access to visitors; others argue that people should pay to gain entry. This essay is an attempt to examine both sides without any prejudice.

On the one hand, many claim that art galleries including museums must be free for the public to visit because of the poor economic situations. In this global- economic scenario citizens find hard to spend money for extra activities such as visiting museums or art galleries. The possible illustration of this is that when a friend of mine visited one of the art galleries in Melbourne, they charged 50 dollars which is expensive for him. This means that a poor person has no choice except to go to parks that have a free admittance. Thus, it is clear that the museums and the art galleries should have free entrance.

On the other hand, there are some who argue that the people need to pay to enter museums or art galleries while considering the investment and maintenance expense. To illustrate, any museum or art galleries require huge capital money which many governments may not offer. Side by side, there is more cost involved to maintain such as payment to artists for their works or the efforts that museums put to collect antique products. As an aid for such a high running cost and initial investment, it is mandatory to charge people.

At the end of the day, museums and art galleries are of utmost importance for any society. So, it is fair to collect money from people on a donation basis, but it should not be charged due to financial crisis among most families.
