GT Writing Task 2

Hello there:
Your comments are welcome.

Essay 3

You can enjoy playing a game only if you win. Do you agree, or not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your view.

I do not agree that games can be enjoyed only if one wins. Although there is a saying ‘winning is a habit’, however, with too much aggression, the true spirit of a game may be lost.

Most games end with a result – either one wins or loose. But this is not a war, where results can change the fate of a nation. Games are played to test the skill of the player(s), encourage competitive spirit and brotherhood among nations. Let us take the example of world cup football (soccer in some countries). With 32 teams competing, it is one of the biggest celebrations around the world that brings all the nations together for one cause – football. And it is the spirit of the football game that makes this tournament the favourite for most people, who wait for 4 years to see their favourite team compete against the best players of the world. Winning or losing takes a back seat; mere participation seems to be enough to make history.

Games give the players a platform to exhibit their skills, where years of practise are put into litmus test. Let us take the case of the 2 most favourite soccer players of the world – Messi and Ronaldo. It would be quite irrelevant for the fans of these two players to see which club wins Barcelona or Real Madrid (name of clubs they represent). A splendid goal through a header or a free kick, from either of the players, would be enough for them to cherish. Therefore, games are played to test the skill of player(s), where the one with the best set of skills emerge as the winner.

Hence, games cannot be played for winning only. The loosing player(s) will earn as much respect as the winning side as long as they play the game in a right spirit.
