All over the world, the number of overweight people is growing. What do you feel are the main causes of this? What are the effects?

Obesity has become one of the most dangerous phenomena faced by humanity. The number of people suffering from it and facing chronic diseases is skyrocketing around the world. The causes and effects of obesity shall be highlighted throughout this essay.

Firstly, obesity may be a result of various causes, one of is the increase of people eating fast food. With their fast life pace, people don’t prioritize healthy eating and prefer to have a quick meal on-the-go or buy fast food meals from the nearest outlet. These fast food meals have high rates of saturated fat, causing excess increase of weight. Another cause is the lack of exercise. Sports and exercises aren’t a priority to many people, especially with the ease of commuting by car or public transportation in addition to large hours spent at home in front of TVs, cause general laziness and weight increase.

As for the effects of obesity, one can claim that it leads to many diseases. These include, but are not limited to, heart problems, joints and muscles aches, and diabetes. Unfortunately, the rate of young people suffering from diabetes and joints’ aches is increasing among young people. Another effect of obesity is low morale and self-esteem. For instance, overweight people will tend to think low of themselves because of the way they look compared to others, find trouble finding suitable clothes, and possible feel depressed because they aren’t able to perform the same activities done by their fit counterparts.

To conclude, obesity is currently causing a major threat to mankind. I believe it is caused by unhealthy eating habits, large consumption of fast food meals and lack of balanced dietary plans. Its effects are the increase of chronic diseases, as well as low self-esteem and morale. I think that it should be addressed drastically by increasing awareness among younger generations on healthy lifestyles, as well as limiting advertising and licenses giving to fast food chains.
