Many students choose to take a gap year before starting university, to travel or gain work experience.

Do you think this is a good idea or a waste of time?

As education sector becomes more saturated, Many students are preferring to take a gap before they move on to their higher studies. This trend is becoming quite famous amongst the new generation and rightly so, because unlike in the past a college degree no longer promises the same prospects as it once used to. In this essay I will dwell further on the benefits of taking a gap year.

Although, it seems like the idea of a gap year is inane. It actually is quite helpful to many students who take this as an opportunity to figure out their next move. In this time particularly with no stress of school, they are free to invest in their talents which are often overshadowed. Moreover, some use this time to research on their interested field of study and opt for observerships and/or internships to gain prior exposure.

However, some career fields are more daunting than the others and a student just cannot afford to take a year long break. For example, if someone wants to go into the field of medicine, then a gap year is just not worth it. Furthermore, it does not reflect nicely on your resume as well for any reputed organization would be wary of a candidate who has gaps in his/her CV without any plausible justification backing up the said breaks.

To conclude, a gap year is like a gamble which surprisingly enough is becoming more and more lucrative with each passing year. As more people pull away from becoming a typical, average and very replaceable cogs of big companies and organization and leaning more towards becoming self-made entrepreneurs and business owners. The idea that a degree "will open many doors" is also becoming outdated quite swiftly. Students are in no rush to join the Universities and, they are taking their time to make sure what's best for them. I personally agree with this trend as it gives individuals a better idea of what to do with their lives.
