IELTS strategy: time management for writing test

Post by IELTS IDP INDIA »

You’re given a total of 60 minutes to complete your IELTS Writing Test, including both Task 1 and Task 2, which is why it becomes really essential to perfect writing skills so you can complete your test in time without making potential errors.
Why is it important to time IELTS Writing task?

It is always suggested to divide your time with respect to the test tasks, so you should complete the first task in 20 minutes and use the rest of the 40 minutes to complete your second task. It is because task 2 is lengthier than task 1, hence it requires more time. If you’ll use most of your time in finishing Task 1 (which is only 150 words), then you’ll probably run out of time for Task 2 (which has to be completed in 250 words).
Remember, Task 2 has more points than Task 1, and it is also important that you strictly follow the word count in the test, else you’ll lose your precious points.

Use these steps to timing your Task 1 IELTS questions in 20 minutes:
1. Use 2-3 minutes to understand the question.
2. Write an overview in 2 short paragraphs in the next 7 minutes.
3. Put some detail in the third paragraph and try completing this in 5-6 minutes.
4. Write a short conclusion, check basic grammar and spelling errors in the rest 5-4 minutes.

Here’re some quick tips on getter better in IELTS writing task:
• Practice more and answer one sample test paper every day to master this technique easily.
• If are not left with enough time to check your mistakes, look for some common errors you usually make when you are writing.
• Never write without thinking, always use five minutes to plan your answer around keywords from the essay topic.
• If you can’t think of any ideas on an opening line, use paraphrasing. Remember, only use different words, don’t copy the entire question, else you’ll lose points.
