In many societies, elderly people often live in retirement
homes. This is not appropriate because families should always care for
their aging members.
Do you agree?

It has been argued that the older generation should live with their families instead of retirement homes. There are both pros and cons of such an arrangement, however I am of the view that the elderly people should live in retirement homes for their own benefit. In this essay, this view is further illustrated.

The primary reason for the retirement homes being better suited for the older people is the access to better medical care. Specialized retirement homes are often located in proximity of medical care facilities, and hence medical needs and emergencies are better catered to. On the other hand, working families prefer to live near schools and commercial areas.

Second rationale is that, the retired people are availed a sense of community and social connection, because the retirement homes are often clustered together with other retired families. This is especially beneficial because they can form new friends and are hence less likely to feel lonely. This view has been fortified by a recent study by ‘Institute of Mental health’ in Japan, the study concluded that people living in retirement homes are at lower risk of depression.

Another justification for retirement homes being better fit is that elderly feel higher degree of freedom and self-esteem when living on their own. Further, living with families can add to their obligations and hence they cannot focus on their life long goals and hobbies. Many retirement homes have vocational classes, gyms and meditation centers, this helps them in living a more satisfying life.

Hence, there are clear benefits of living in retirement homes, because of its convenience and it leads to more fulfilling life.
