A grammar question

Post by allen_zhang »

Hi All,
I have a grammar question and hope someone can help me.
A few days ago I wrote a letter to complain about a hotel service: Because of a air conditioner problem, I took showers several times during the night- It was several days ago, and I have checked out.

I wrote: As a result, during the whole night,I had to take showers every 2 hours

I am thinking about two other tenses:
As a result, during the whole night,I have had to take showers every 2 hours.
As a result, during the whole night,I had had to take whowers every 2 hours.

Can anyone tell me which one is correct and why?
It seems to me that they are all acceptable.

BR!
Allen

Your first sentence is more correct although it sounds a bit difficult to read to me. Because you are talking about what already happened in the past, simple past tense is appropriate. The other two sentences are not correct in this context.

Please note: to take a shower ---not showers

I would change your sentence to: As a result, for the whole night I had to take a shower every two hours.
