Post by FLS101 »

Some people think that university should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What, in your opinion should be the main function of a university?

Have you ever thought why Cambridge University still takes a significant place among all the institution of learning in the world? Have you ever thought why a flood of outstanding students consider the Cambridge University as their ideal university? I suppose it is not only because of its long history and profound cultural foundation, but also is more of a producer Nobel Prize than other university listed. I personally esteem that in terms of the responsibility of the university, it have multiple function more than allowing students find a decent job.

The one of the main point is that the university undertakes the obligation to cultivate both specialist and generalists. On the one hand it is more competitive to have a solid grasp of professional skills and comprehensive capability .The industrial structure has always been in a constant change process, thus what we are studying cannot be controlled by the demands of society .For another hand, it is easier create breakthrough and masterpiece. That is to say, some innovation field such as art, physics ,technology cannot measure by current situation .As with Einstein done a loads of research in university about relativity, not enjoying a immediately popularity at that period . Surprisingly, it now regard as an unparalleled discovery made in 21st century.

Another reason is that university could shoulder responsibility to teach students now to be humanitarianism .Technology, learnt in university, is not so much promoting economy advance as enhancing people’s quality of life. With the enormous gap between diversity areas around the world, there are alternatives to address the problem. Philanthropists donate much money to developing countries, making a great difference.

There is no denying that the person with professional skill predominates in employment. . To be more precise, some jobs need highly specialized knowledge and hands-on experience as their clarity division of labor. Besides, acquiring a certain expertise is less demanding. Then applying what people have learnt contributes to efficiency.

Compared with a satisfied job, it is far more vital to nature graduates to make active contribution to the advance of human knowledge and establish a hopeful and cherish world.
