Essay_Responsibility of teachers

Teachers should only be responsible for judging the academic ability of the students and not for the student's general behavior.
To what extent do you agree disagree.

Over the history of education the role of the teacher has always been a contentious topic. While some people argue that the duty of the teacher is judging the academic skills of students, it seems apparent that the role of the teacher is far wider and it incorporates developing the general behavior of the students as well.

A number of significant reasons can be identified to claim that the duties of teacher are not restricted to academic judgment. The most notable argument is that academic skills acquired without accepted social skills or social behavior allows to create an unbalanced individual. In order to bring up children as socially responsible citizen in the future, their social behavior skills need to be enhanced. A class room provides the perfect environment to develop social skills such as respecting and listening to others. Therefore, the teachers are in a better position compared to parents to mentor on student's behavior and it should be a part of their duty of care. Secondly, students particularly some adolescents require assistance with maintaining their emotional well being that plays an important part in general behavior. Emotionally unstable students may tend to engage in anti social behavior such as bullying that may interrupt the entire learning process. Therefore, in order to make the academic learning process meaningful teachers need to address the need of emotional well being.

Despite these beliefs, some people argue that the duties of a teacher should be limited to academic judgment. According to them, time spent on developing student's general behavior is a waste of time and it could be better invested in advancing academic skills while parents hold the responsibility of developing general behavior. However, this may not always be the case, because students spend a significant amount of their time in school and it is the place they associate with peers and it provides an ideal environment to develop social skills.

In conclusion, although some people advocate that teacher's responsibility I limited to judging the academic skills, it seems that it clearly involves enhancing the general behavior of students. In order to make a socially responsible future generation, teachers need to address the general social skills of the students.
