With the advancement of technology, especially in aviation, tourism has become one of the dominant industries in many countries. While enjoying the benefits of the prosperity of tourism, its detrimental effects, such as environmental and cultural issues should never be neglected.This essay is going to discuss these problems along with some possible deterring solutions.
First of all, the environmental issues triggered by the growing tourism industry has increasingly become the major concerns recently. On the one hand, in terms of air pollution and global energy shortage caused by the mounting popularity of air travel, governments should stipulate certain regulations, restricting the greenhouse gases emission of each air companies or charging carbon taxes in accordance with the amount of their annual emissions.On the other hand, domestic pollution, particularly, in famous sightseeing views, also arouses public attentions on preservation of local environments. In this case, government should allocate more funds in protecting and harnessing local pollution in favour of sustainable developments of the countries. Simultaneously, the media should disseminate the importance of environmental protection and heighten the awareness of the public. For example, in China, the public has been spontaneously organizing volunteer programs to clean up the garbage around the Palaces and the Great Wall.
Another concern regarding the prevalence of tourism is that some ancient cultural characteristics are seemingly about to disappear in the foreseeable future. Travel destination countries tend to modify their aesthetics to satisfy the global standards. For instance, in Fuzhou, China,the local government decided to reconstruct ten antique lanes and streets with the purpose of spurring its local tourism, however, it seemed to lose the unique features of those buildings in the meantime. In order to maintain the national and cultural identity, governments ought to be aware that notwithstanding the prosperity of economies are of vital importance to the national capacity, the cultural heritage should be properly preserved. in the process of development, society should not only focus on the strategies of creating profits, but also how to conserve the precious heritages. After all, it is the cultural differences that initiate the origins of travelling.
In conclusion,although the side effects of tourism industry are unavoidable, governments and society should pay their best efforts on preventing domestic and global environment from devastating and disseminating the profound value of environmental and cultural preservation.
