More and more people are migrating to cities in search of a better life, but city life can be extremely difficult. Explain some of the difficulties of living in a city. How can governments make urban life better for everyone?

It is true that an increasing number of people are moving to urban areas in order to improve their quality of life. Nevertheless, living in cities is challenging. This essay will present a high cost of living and pollution as the major problems faced by urban dwellers and then suggest some suitable steps that can be taken by the government to improve the quality of urban life.

To begin with, living in cities can expose the inhabitant to a number of problems. Firstly, the cost of living in cities is significantly greater compared to rural areas due to expensive apartment rents and high prices of edibles like fruits and vegetables. In other words, high population density in cities results in a high demand for lodging and food and as a result, these basic amenities are costlier than they should be. Secondly, an ever rising level of air and noise pollution, coupled with limited space for throwing waste mean that city life is unhealthy. This is because the exhaust fumes for vehicles can cause respiratory tract problems like bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while the constant exposure to noise from construction works and sounding of horns can result in conductive deafness.

Although the problems mentioned above may seem insurmountable, the government can implement a few measures to alleviate the situation. One possible solution would be to expand the urban areas by developing the countrysides. This would help reduce the population density in cities and also increase the number of apartments to live in. Therefore, the imbalance between demand and available resources would be addressed and consequently, the cost of living would decline. To address the health issues affecting resident of urban areas, authorities have to encourage the use of public transportation. This can be achieved by improving the reliability and facilities of buses and metros and also by imposing green taxes and congestion charges on cars. If more and more people opt for means of public transport, the noise pollution and smoke from vehicles would decline, making cities less injurious to health.

To conclude, although living in a city does have its fair share of difficulties, increasing the extent of urban areas and decreasing the number of private vehicles can help tackle some of these problems.
