In many countries schools have severe problems with student behaviour.

What do you think are the causes of this?

What solutions can you suggest?

During the recent times, schools across the world have had to deal with disobedience and disregard for discipline by students. This essay will put forward domestic conflicts coupled with drug and alcohol abuse by students as the prime factors responsible for this problem. Further, counselling and drug rehabilitation centres will be suggested as some viable solutions.

The epidemic of increasing behavioural problems can be attributed to two major etiologies. Firstly, exposure to domestic conflicts and marital discord between parents results in a psychological disturbance in children. Many experts believe that the rebellious behaviour of students at school is a way of venting the frustration emanating from the problems in their family lives. Secondly, alcoholism and misuse of recreational drugs have also been associated with poor disciplinary records. In fact, in a study conducted by The New York Times in 2014, around 30% of the students facing detention after school hours admitted to some form of drug abuse.

The multifarious reasons, as discussed above, require a multipronged approach to stem the tide of disciplinary infringements. A major role could be played by counselling advisors in schools, who would hold one on one sessions with the students to discover the reasons that led to behave in an unacceptable manner. Once the students feel that they can open up to someone, the pent up frustration would be released, thereby obviating the need to be involved in rebellious behaviour. As for those addicted to drugs, schools could take help from rehabilitation centres and detox facilities that can systematically and safely wean them off the habit forming drugs.

In conclusion, the rising levels of household conflict and drug abuse are the root causes behind the unacceptable behaviour of students at schools. To alleviate the situation, school authorities should have a counselling service in place and also, if required, seek assistance from centres that specialise in the rehabilitation of drug addicts.
