The given pie charts compare electricity generated from different sources in both Germany and France during year 2009, with renewable sources given in some details. Generally, it is clear that Germany used conventional thermal sources as the main source of electricity production, while France depended more on nuclear power. Both countries used different renewable sources in varying degrees.
When considering electricity generation in general, Germany produced 59.6 % of its electricity using fossil fuels, while nuclear and renewable energy sources shared by 23% and 17.4% respectively. In contrast, France used nuclear energy more productively to supply more than 3 quarters of its electricity, while the remaining fourth was produced by renewable energy forming 13.7% and around a tenth produced by conventional thermal energy sources.
When we look particularly at different forms of renewable energy both countries applied, it can be seen that hydroelectric energy represented four fifth of renewable electric generation in France, compared to only 17.7% in Germany. On the other hand, Germany exploited biomass and wind energies to generate more than three quarters of its renewable electricity, with the share of 39.3 and 36.9 respectively, both sources used to a much less extent in France. Solar energy shared very little in the production of electricity, forming only 6.1% in Germany, and a very minor proportion in France. Geothermal energy was not used in both countries in the given year.
