Feedback on Writing Task 2 (Agree/Disagree)

Post by m.saad.yaseen »

The advantage of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Write at least 250 words.

It is true that the proliferation of the English language on an international scale is profoundly impacting many countries and people by benefiting underdeveloped nations’ businesses and tourism through globalization and providing its people a foundation for accessing the quality education available in developed countries. Although, the benefits are countless, drawbacks do exist.

The widespread usage of the language attracts foreign investors and tourists from developed countries; promoting globalization, and it has both advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, the economy is improved through the profitable businesses of multi-national companies. In addition to this, the tourists’ arrivals increase due to hospitality enjoyed when spoken to in an ordinary language. Moreover, this influx increases the government’s revenue generated from the hospitality industry. On the other hand, the promotion of international businesses can harm the local ones. Furthermore, some tourists from developed countries undermine the natives for not knowing the English language.

English provides a solid foundation for people seeking quality education in developed countries and equips people to secure a high paying job in a multi-national company. Firstly, it is the only medium of teaching instruction in the world’s top universities; an active command of the language secures an admission to a university. To add, knowledge of the language place candidates a step forward in the job hunting pool; the chances are high that the desired position is earned.

While the increasing usage of English attracts foreign businesses and tourists in underdeveloped nations, local businesses may be stifled, and natives may be undermined. However, the benefits it brings to these nations through globalization, and their people by laying a foundation for quality education eclipse its drawbacks, which in my opinion, is a positive trend.

Hello!

In the first main paragraph, I do not think you have explained why the use of English facilitates this.

The education aspect mentioned in the second main paragraph is true to some extent, but the job aspect is not. All the students at that university should have the required level of English so they will all be competing.

The conclusion makes no sense. The 'natives' will be the ones learning English, I presume. English and globalisation may be connected but they are not the same thing.

Overall, very weak vocabulary. It looks good, but meaning is very unclear. Grammar is reasonable, but there is a lack of variety of structures to convey exact meaning.

All the best,
David
