can you suggest grammatical structures that i could incorporte in my essays ?

Post by Vodo_Virus » Thu Sep 22, 2016 1:27 pm

Hi fellow students and instructors

my grammatical range is usually compromised in my essays ... i tend to write naturally as i speak which is kind of limited in grammatical structures

so my request is that you suggest grammatical structures that i could effectively implement in my writing

for example

using passive sound
conditionals
the more ... the more
complex sentences ( examples please )

what else you may suggest ?

i have problems with cohesion and coherence too but this is another Q :D

my goal is 7 but 8 would be ideal

can you suggest grammatical structures that i could incorporte in my essays ?

Hi Vodo Virus,

I'd be more than happy to help however rather than suggesting structures you can use, it'd be better for you to post a sample of your writing and I will offer suggestions for improvement.

The problem with suggesting grammatical devices to use is that they may not be relevant in every essay. It is a much better habit to focus on the core principles. If you'd like to post some writing of yours (or you could answer the question 'Technology is increasingly becoming a big part of modern life. Suggest positive and negative effects of using technology and give your opinion on it's overall effect.')

I hope to hear from you soon and will be more than happy to work with you to improve your writing. :)

I've written a blog post about this. Here is the link
http://ieltscharlie.com/ielts-writing/i ... mmar-tips/

Here's a summary:

1. Use subordinating conjunctions
Join clauses with: e.g. because, so that, although, while, whereas

2. Use relative clauses
Don't write "The cat was sitting on the wall. It was being stroked by a girl."
Write: "The cat, which was sitting on the wall, was being stroked by a girl."

3. Use 'there' + 'to be'
Don't write: "A cat was sitting on the wall",
Write: "There was a cat sitting on the wall."

4. Start the sentence with a subordinating conjunction
Instead of "the cat was sitting on the wall because she was tired"
Write: "Because she was tired, the cat was sitting on the wall."

5. Start the sentence with a prepositional phrase
e.g. since, at, among, about, throughout, with regards to, in time. For example:
"Since the beginning of the afternoon, the cat had been sitting on the wall."

Hope that helps. But read the full article here:
