Postby eusebe » Fri Mar 27, 2015 2:52 pm

Hi everyone !
I just got my results today and i scored 6.5 (6.5 in writing, listening, reading and speaking).
However, i need a 7 to study at university, with 7 in writing, listening, reading and speaking...

Can someone (Ryan, do you agree ?) give me advices to score 7 in one month ?
Thank you in advance ;-)

Hello,

I have some advice for you. It will be related to listening and reading (because I can't check my writing and speaking, and probably I'm poor at them).

For reading:
1) read BBC news - http://www.bbc.com/ There are a lot of interesting news all around the world. Just read them when you wake up or just before going to sleep.
2) read a book - pick any book. Read one section a day with translating all the worlds that you don't know to your exercise book. After reading the section try to memorize the words.

For listening:
1) watch documentaries - http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/ Pick any that you like. You will hear a lot of the British accent.
2) listen to BBC radio - are you doing something unrelated to English? Why not to listen to a radio as a background? Check this out: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio

I hope that this helps.

Cheers,
KrK

It is quite easy dear. Just work hard to get to the 7 because you already are on the 6.5 now. Just have to do a little bit more effort for just .05.

Hi there,

First of all, my recommendation is "Don't be upset!!! Keep practicing!!!".

Here are couple of more advice for you:

1. Reading: the most two difficult and time consuming questions in IELTS, as I think, are Matching titles with paragraphs and Matching summaries with paragraph. My experience is to leave these at last. Firstly, you should try to do others questions that considerably are easier than above ones. Then, the tricks for these difficult questions are to read the first sentence, couple of last sentences of each paragraph which include the topic and the conclusion. With this you are able to pick up some correct titles to link to paragraphs. After that, if there still are titles/ summaries to select, you will need to quickly read carefully the paragraphs one by one. I am sure with this techniques, you will be able to fully answer these toughest categories of questions.

2. Listening the trick here is practicing the practice test from books, such as from Cambridge, McMillan... the more practice test you do, the higher possibility you gain high score. This familiarises your ear to react to the Ielts conversations. It also helps you to get used to the pressure of the listening section. In addition, pay attention to the ending sounds of nouns since it is really difficult to notice them if you don't concentrate enough. Last but not least, try to read the questions in advance to prepare yourself with sufficient information and what kind of questions are next.

3. Speaking: this is my own trick, in case you are anxious, you may drink a half bottle of volka/ spy or any alcohol (200ml) an hour prior to the speaking section. I've tried and it paid off :D. Nevertheless, most importantly, you have to practice speaking in a organized way.
