Re: Can we use idioms in our writing? Do they increase the score?

Hi Doni and dear sir, My personal opinion is to avoid using idioms for your writing task. It will make your essay look casual. You are encouraged to use idioms in your speaking task however, but your grammar must be good enough to back it up, else the trick to impress the examiner may backfire. Also...

Re: IELTS Speaking Evaluation Criteria

Interesting document !!

Dear sir, just asking out of curiosity,

Is the speaking section of the IELTS assessed then and there while taking the test or is it done later by someone else who listens to the recording again ?

Re: Example of 7-band essay?

Hi Very valid and interesting question. I didn't think of this earlier. However, IMO, it is not difficult for an examiner to grade an essay depending on its quality as a 5,6,7,8 or 9. And depending on the errors you commit or if word count is less, you would be penalized 0.5 or 1 from that score I t...

Re: Need to Jump from band 7 to 8 in WRITING MODULE

Hi faty

I think that you will need to work on, or rather just be more careful, with your spellings

In your own given query, I can see that the words 'beginning' and 'weak' are spelt wrong

Best wishes

Re: cue card questions about experiences that the test-taker have not experienced

Hi The only way you can do the cue card well is by good preparation and practice Also, the examiner is testing your level of English, not your general knowledge Try to focus on activities on your daily life. If you are a student, you could think of any small accident that you witnessed while commuti...

Re: Listening - hyphenated words in the answer

Hi Yuri

I think the only thing they look for in the ielts listening test is whether you have correctly identified the answer from the audio clip and if the spelling is correct.

I feel that the hyphens do not matter much.

Re: Reading - Problematic answer with [Not Given]

Yes. I agree with you to some extent. But important thing to remember is that there are no 'trick questions' in the ielts reading passage . Maybe they must have mentioned juniors and children as the same in different areas of the passage You should write 'not given' if they ask about the data regard...

Re: Here's a question for academic candidates ...

Dear David, Thanks for the explanation. Sorry for the delay in this post. Just asking for further clarification, 1) is 'every' essay checked for word count ? I thought that we must have an approximate idea of the word count by multiplying words per sentence * number of lines to stay on track . I tho...

Re: Here's a question for academic candidates ...

Interesting question! I think it is better to keep it underworded at 138 words. But yes, every book of ielts writing states that you MUST write the required minimum number of words. I generally would start off with an introduction (10 words) by just rephrasing the given question in my own words and ...

Re: Please check my Essay

Good attempt. You have used a lot of of linking words to make compound sentences and you have a wide vocabulary range But if I were to criticize, the question clearly asks you to give your opinion. You have not done that. You have only discussed both the views. You will lose 0.5 to 1 band score for ...

Re: How many pencils can I have during the test?

Hello

Please carry 2 pencils ( already well sharpened ), a ball pen , an eraser and sharpener for the exam.

I don't think you will require (or be allowed) to carry anything more than this
